General election · 10 Aug 2027
Everything persons with disabilities need for Kenya's next General Election, in one place. Whether you will vote, stand, nominate or organise, start here.
Until the General Election
The rules that decide who stands, and who is heard, are being set now.
The Constitution says persons with disabilities have the right to take part in public life, and it requires the State to progressively ensure that at least five per cent of members of elective and appointive bodies are persons with disabilities (Article 54).
Article 82 says the law on voting must take into account the special needs of persons with disabilities. Articles 97, 98 and 177 reserve nominated seats in the National Assembly, the Senate and every county assembly for special interest groups, including persons with disabilities. Those seats are filled from party lists.
The gap is real. In past elections, more than 20 of Kenya's 47 county assemblies ended up with no member with a disability.

29Saturday 29 May 2027
The IEBC starts registering candidates, and campaigning may begin. Ward (MCA) candidates register from 2 to 11 June.
23Wednesday 23 June 2027
Disputes must be filed within 24 hours of the decision being challenged.
25Friday 25 June 2027

7Saturday 7 August 2027
No campaigning after this.
10Tuesday 10 August 2027
Polls open at 6 am and close at 5 pm. If you are in the queue at 5 pm, you still vote.
If you will vote
Your vote counts the same as everyone else's. Here is how to make sure you can cast it.
Step 1 of 6
Registration continues at IEBC constituency offices. Take your national ID card or Kenyan passport. If you first registered before 2012, the IEBC says you must register again to be on the current register.
Step 2 of 6
Send your ID or passport number by SMS to 70000, or go to verify.iebc.or.ke. It shows your ward and your polling station. Check early, so there is time to fix a mistake.
Step 3 of 6
Find your polling station before election day and how you will get there. If you know it is hard to reach or get into, tell the IEBC office in your constituency early, and tell us.
Step 4 of 6
If you cannot vote on your own because of a disability, you have the right to be helped by a person of your choice whom you trust. One person can only assist one voter, and the assistance is recorded by the polling officials.
Step 5 of 6
Taking a photo or video of your marked ballot is an election offence. Nobody, including the person helping you, should tell anyone how you voted.
Step 6 of 6
Tell the presiding officer at the polling station first. Then report it to the IEBC and share it with the Include360 community so others know.
If you will stand
Persons with disabilities can stand for any seat, from ward to president. Most candidates come through a party, so the party's rules matter as much as the law.
Step 1 of 6
Run on a party ticket, which means winning the party primary, or as an independent, which means not being a member of any party and handing in your name and symbol by 8 May 2027.
Step 2 of 6
They are certified by the Registrar of Political Parties by 30 October 2026. Read how primaries work, what they cost, and what the party offers members with disabilities. Some parties offer reduced nomination fees for aspirants with disabilities. Ask yours.
Step 3 of 6
Resign by 10 February 2027 if you want to run.
Step 4 of 6
All primaries must be finished by 8 May 2027.
Step 5 of 6
Candidate registration runs from 29 May 2027. Ward candidates register from 2 to 11 June 2027. Ask the IEBC returning officer about any support you need to get through nomination.
Step 6 of 6
Nomination disputes must be filed within 24 hours and settled by 23 June 2027.
Nominated seats
Many leaders with disabilities enter politics through nominated seats. These are filled from party lists, so the list is where the work happens.
Every county
Every county assembly has nominated members for marginalised groups, including persons with disabilities and the youth (Article 177). Parties nominate them from their lists after the election.
Nominated seats
Twelve members are nominated by parties to represent special interests, including the youth, persons with disabilities and workers (Article 97).
One man, one woman
Two senators represent persons with disabilities, one man and one woman, nominated by parties (Article 98).
By 25 Jun 2027
Party lists go to the IEBC by 25 June 2027, in order of priority. Ask your party how it builds the list, and where members with disabilities are placed.
In Parliament
The County Governments Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 would guarantee seats for persons with disabilities in every county assembly. It is in the National Assembly now.
