What the Act does

  • Jobs: at least 5% of public service jobs, at national and county level, go to persons with disabilities. Employers with 20 or more staff must reserve at least 5% of direct jobs.
  • Tax relief: employers can deduct 25% of wages paid to employees with disabilities, plus 50% of the cost of making a workplace accessible. Assistive devices may be exempt from import duty and VAT.
  • Access: information must be available in accessible formats. New buildings that don't meet accessibility standards can't get an occupation permit, and the Council can order owners to remove barriers.
  • Protection: discrimination, abuse, concealment and harmful practices are offences.
  • The Council: the National Council for Persons with Disabilities registers persons with disabilities and organisations, audits accessibility and advises government.

Why track it

A law is only as good as its implementation. Several protections depend on regulations that still have to be made. This tracker follows them one by one.
